In the past four years (from 2018 to October 2021), 650000 artificial intelligence related patents have been applied for in the world, of which enterprises account for the highest proportion, with 448000 applications, 165000 institutions / research institutes and 33000 individuals.
It can be found that patent applications are mainly concentrated in enterprises, accounting for 68.9%. The number of patent applications of colleges / institutes ranks second, accounting for 25.3%, and the number of individual applications ranks third, accounting for 5.1%. We found that among the patent applications in the field of artificial intelligence, the proportion of individual applications is relatively low, which is lower than the average level of individual applications in the field of science and technology, indicating that the technology in the field of artificial intelligence still depends on the team; Institutions / research institutes account for the second, indicating that the original innovation of artificial intelligence is still in a very active stage. It is expected that more basic technologies of artificial intelligence will be produced in the next 3-5 years.
In the past four years, more than 100 countries and regions around the world have applied for artificial intelligence patents, of which the three countries with the largest number of applications are China, the United States and Japan, with 445000, 73000 and 39000 patent applications respectively. It is worth mentioning that in the past four years, the number of patent applications in China has been growing at a rate of 1 ~ 2 times higher than that in the second place.
In the past four years, the six countries and regions that have accepted the most AI patents are China, the United States, the world intellectual property organization, South Korea, Japan and the European Patent Office.
